Tucked away in a small town just outside of Oaxaca city called Teotitlan de Valle you’ll find Christian Mendoza and his family. The Mendoza’s are known around the world for elevating the tradition of weaving and rug making to pieces that are better suited for art galleries than floors. They are often referred to as master spinners and weavers with both pride and modesty. The family’s roots are shared by many in the village which started in the time of the Aztecs. What sets the family apart is the depth and creativity they bring to the process. I first heard stories of Christian, while traveling through the region due to a project where he wove birdsongs into rugs. After learning about this I knew I had to meet him. He spoke about the influences of the early Zapotec designs and carvings that are still visible around the village. He also spoke about how important art is in his life. It was easy to connect about our shared passions for creativity and the need for self-expression.
